Tonight - Designer Drugs @ Boondocks

Houston, catch Designer Drugs tonight at Boondocks. If you’ve checked your Reader anytime in the last three weeks you already know what’s up with Designer Drugs. For those of you who don’t even know what “Reader” I am referring to, let me put you on some game (see, I am Black). In the last three weeks Designer Drugs has released three badass remixes and are set to release their debut single Zombie through IHEARTCOMIX on October 26.

It looks like DD has figured out the way to receive sustained attention from the “30 seconds of fame” culture of the Blogosphere. “How, how do I, an online artist, get attention from the Blogosphere and achieve complete internet success?” asked the online artist in the back corner of Myspace. Well, Online Artist, normally I would charge you $19.95 plus shipping and handling for such information but since I like your face and I have free time at work, I’ll give you a quick rundown.

Artists must launch a three-pronged attack that begins with the release of multiple remixes or original productions in a short period of time. In today’s example, DD released three aesthetically similar, well-produced remixes of artists ranging on the popularity scale from International Superstar, to Blog Superstar, to “Who The Hell?”. Next, the artist must go on tour. This makes the artists tangible to the listener, more than just another unread, then read tab on the Google Reader of the average blog connoisseur. And finally, to ensure maximum money making potential, the artist must hit the internet with his single, EP or full length album available on iTunes, Beatport, Turntable Lab, your local corner store, etc. So, if my theory holds up (it does), Designer Drugs are on their way to become millionaires and so can you (no you can’t).

Okay, that’s enough Rudimentary Online Marketing 101 for today, hit up Designer Drugs’ myspace page to listen to Zombie right now, and if you missed the aforementioned badass remixes you can pick them up below.

IAMX – Spit It Out (Designer Drugs Remix) [YSI]

Meddle (Designer Drugs 80s Coke Jam Remix)

You wanna know what Little Boots' Meddle would sound like in 1985 while you were high on Colombian nose candy dancing in your pastel colored Ralph Lauren suit? No? Well, I don't care, download the new Designer Drugs Meddle remix anyway, it's awesome.

Friday Mix Up 5

First up we have the Computer Fairyland Mixtape from Little Boots. I, along with the rest of the blogosphere, received the email on Wednesday, so I'm pretty sure yall already have the mixtape. What you don't have is Little Boots' American release debut, the Arecibo EP. Arecibo drops mid-Novemeber through IAMSOUND Records in vinyl and through iTunes. Check the IAMSOUND website to get a specific date and make sure you purchase the EP to add to your Little Boots shrine you have undoubtedly begun building in your closet.

The Polish DJ collective known as Hungry Hungry Models sent me their interestingly titled mixtape, Chopin Was A Pussy Slayer, a couple days ago. I looked into this Chopin character and learned, among other things, that he was Polish, which explains why they chose this particular composer from the Romantic period, and I also learned that he died when he was 39. That's when I realized this mixtape is supposed to promote the practice of safe sex amongst us youngsters. See kids, you can't just go around "slayin pussy" because one of these days, that pussy is gonna burn you. Burn you to death. If it could happen to Chopin, it can happen to anyone. So download the album below and as you're pre-partying with your "pussy slayin" crew, remember to keep it safe tonight kiddos.

Tracklist:
1. Intro: Par-T-One - I'm So Crazy (3 Is A Crowd I'm So Lazy Remix)

I just wish it was the Breakbot remix, then we would all be in electropop heaven. If you haven't heard the first "episode" from The Twelves, you can pick it up here.

Little Boots & Portmanteau

Before I heap praise onto Portmanteau for their cool electro tracks, I must admit I felt a sizable level of apprehension about initially giving their tracks a listen. First off, the name Portmanteau. Calm down guys, we didn’t all go to Ivy League schools here. I like my electro groups to have monosyllabic, at most disyllabic names. Daft Punk, Justice, Danger. See what I mean, easy. I can’t even pronounce the last part of their name, let alone spell it. Once I overcame the confusion their name caused, I began reading the email and found this, “Portmanteau combines live instrumentation, children's instruments, synthesisers, samplers, visuals, and their owl known only as "the Colonel".” I think the presence of any animal in a track (especially one ironically named “the Colonel”) is enough to make any electro fan stop and think for a second. I don’t claim to speak for all electro fans but I’m sure most would agree that we don’t want “experimental” music, we want bangers made for maximum dancefloor grinding. The Looks not Pet Sounds.

However, it didn’t take long for my love of new music to quell my rising apprehension and I downloaded the tracks anyway. And what can I say, they are good. I didn’t even hear an owl in any of the tracks, but I did hear the rest of the good stuff mentioned in their email. My two favorite tracks, Thouse and Defibrilator, are included below. Check out more tracks here.

Portmanteau – Thouse [YSI]
Portmanteau - Defibrilator [YSI]

*No animals were hurt during the making of these songs (not sure if this is true, but I don’t want PETA on my ass).

My anchor for today is the new Little Boots track, Meddle. Meddle is another anchor track that I’m not being totally cynical about. I became an instant fan of Dead Disco (which Little Boots was a member of) after I downloaded their self-titled EP and the numerous remixes of their work. So when I heard Dead Disco was actually dead, of course I was like, “WTF?” Then, I heard Little Boots was gonna keep up the good fight and release more music on her own and I was like, “YES!” Stuck on Repeat, Little Boots’ first release was pretty dope and Meddle is also dope. So there you go, this is not simply a shameless attempt at more blog hits.
